I can just hear Willie Nelson singing "On the Road Again" as I read a recent article about an new generation of retirees hitting the open road. However, these folks certainly are traveling in style.
In an article titled "Luxury Retirement on Wheels," SmartMoney’s Catey Hill takes a look into the increasing trend of mobile retirements and luxury RV's. The article briefly examines the market, citing increased sales in Class A gas motor homes (i.e., the luxury models). So, how are industry analysts explaining it? Easy, my dear Watson. They are examining the recently retiring generations who have both the resources and the inclination (i.e., they are the generation that grew up with "On The Road.") No surprise, but the median age for RV owners is 54. Hill then explores the idea and motivations of these retirees, noting all the amenities of a luxury RV. They include hardwood floors, brushed steel appliances, flat-screen TV’s, etc., not to mention the freedom of living on the open road and opportunities for "glamping." [Note: That is the unfortunate insider term for "glamorous camping."]
