There is an undeniable element of self-expression when it comes to planning for the who should get what, when and how of your estate. When it is all said and done, however, you want your loved ones to still love one another after the distributions are made. Sometimes that is easier said than done.
For some, the inheritance they leave is often conceived as the final and ultimate tool to show your favorites or to spurn less-loved family members. Of course, my favorite depiction is this Direct TV commercial from a few years ago.
After all, estate planning for the entire family can be a difficult balancing act.
It can take a good deal of thought, too, but is well worth the effort.
Forbes recently offered a bit of wisdom on the topic and a goal too: “How To Make Sure Your Children Keep Speaking To Each Other After You Die.”
More often than not, communication is key. So, how do you intend to keep the peace? Have you planned accordingly already?
Remember: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” When making your financial, tax and estate plans, do not go it alone. Be sure to engage competent professional counsel.
