I get really angry when I hear about folks who take advantage of senior citizens. I am sure you do, too. It looks like San Diego prosecutors are going after the bad guys with a special focus ... and additional resources.
That is good news for aging Baby Boomers in the area and their families.
In fact, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office has rolled out a new website and a dedicated reporting line to help protect senior citizens from physical abuse and financial scams.
Since its creation a year ago, the Long Term Care Special Prosecutions Unit has opened 113-cases and filed five felony charges.
"Elder abuse is one of those areas that is under reported for a lot of reasons and we've shined a spot light on it here in San Diego County," District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis told sandiego6.com in a recent post titled “D.A. launches new resource to combat elder abuse.”
San Diego families can report elder abuse directly on a special section on the DA’s website, as well as to a new reporting phone number.
County leaders report that they have a growing aging population, and the number of people ages 75 and up will nearly double in the future from 170,000 to 325,000.
Consequently, that boom in the number of senior citizens will necessitate more resources and oversight to ensure the safety and care of local senior citizens.
What about Overland Park, Kansas, or where you call home? The situation is most likely very similar where you live.
Are there any retiring Baby Boomers in your life who may be unable to care for themselves - and very vulnerable - now or in the not-too-distant future?
Contact an experienced estate planning attorney to help develop legal strategies (e.g., advance health care directives and general durable powers of attorney) that will protect the senior citizens in your life from predators.
