Do not let estate planning overwhelm you.
Estate planning can be tough.
There are laws to consider, assets to inventory and logistics to establish.
According to a recent Wilmington Biz article titled “Keep Mental Hang-Ups From Sabotaging Estate Planning,” the emotional aspects can be the most burdensome.
There are many things going through your mind.
I get that.
What about my child who has an addition or an untrustworthy spouse?
Am I favoring one child over the other?
However, letting fear postpone your planning will only cause more anxiety for you and your loved ones.
As FDR famously noted, the only thing we truly have to fear is "fear" itself.
It is often best to include an objective third party in your planning.
By working with an experienced estate planning attorney, you can create a comprehensive plan that will assauge your fears and provide for your loved ones to the benefit of all involved.
So, how do you find an "experienced" estate planning attorney?
First, ask around. Friends, family and other professional advisors are trustworthy sources.
Second, conduct an "organic" search on "Google" for "estate planning" near you (e.g., "Estate Planning Anytown MoKan").
Third, either way, verify! Check out the education, experience, ratings and client reviews of any attorney before you contact him or her.
In fact, I use both of these services to thoroughly vett attorneys before referring members of our "client" family for legal help in other areas of law or for matters in jurisdictions outside Kansas or Missouri.
Remember: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” When making your financial, tax and estate plans, do not go it alone. Be sure to engage competent professional counsel.
